Legal case management software

Legal case management software keeps each court case in one file, with its hearings, judgments, evidence and power of attorney one click away. In jaah law, by default, the case's lawyers who have a user get to-dos for each hearing and after a lost first-instance or appeal judgment.

This case management software for law firms and legal departments is one part of jaah law, the law firm management software.

Why hearings and deadlines slip

  • Hearing dates sit in several diaries; minutes go unwritten.
  • The appeal window after a lost judgment lives in someone's memory.
  • A power of attorney lapses before a hearing, unnoticed.

Open the case

The case holds the client and its role, the other parties, the court and its case number, the lawyers and the power of attorney.

A template can fill in its subject, type and court; templates are on by default.

A case can also open from an approved client request.

Schedule the hearing

Add Hearing on the case fills in its court, client and lawyers.

Each hearing becomes a calendar meeting, with the court as its location.

Without requirements, it gives each lawyer with a user a to-do to prepare them, due three days before by default.

Close the hearing with its minutes

Close Hearing needs the minutes: the session written on the hearing, or a session PDF.

Writing the requirements opens a Write session to-do, due the day after the hearing; closing the hearing closes it.

If the date or the lawyers change, the to-dos follow.

Record the judgment

A judgment records its stage, number, date, outcome, decree text and decree PDF.

Won or lost, it sets the case's status, closing date and stage; a petition changes nothing.

A lost judgment needs a reason from the firm's list.

A won or lost judgment recorded from its hearing closes it, once the session is written.

Appeal, reconsideration or revocation

Decided at first instance, the case shows Appeal (to an appeal court) or Reconsideration (same court); decided on appeal, Revoke. The history keeps the earlier court.

A lost first-instance or appeal judgment gives each lawyer with a user a deadline to-do. It falls due 30 days after the judgment date unless the firm changes it. It is a reminder, on by default.

Send to enforcement and invoice

With the Executions app, Add Execution opens a linked enforcement file after a won or lost first-instance or final judgment, or on a cancelled case.

Create Invoice drafts the client's invoice for a typed amount, by the case's payment method: total case or per hearing. Case cards show not invoiced, unpaid or paid.

Reminders, and who receives them

Hearing and judgment to-dos go to lawyers who have a user.

  • A new case: a review to-do for its lawyers with a user (or its creator), due in three days by default.
  • Tomorrow's hearings: one e-mail a day to each lawyer with a user, when the firm turns it on (off by default).
  • One hour before an open hearing: a WhatsApp reminder to its lawyers with a user, when the firm connects a number.

Does the power of attorney cover the hearing?

A hearing shows a banner when its case has no valid power of attorney on the hearing date.

It also flags lawyers who are not its agents; those without a user are not checked. It never blocks saving, and dismissing it hides only that problem.

The Case Report appends the decree PDFs; Hearing Details, the session PDFs.

Send Report e-mails the case or judgment report to the clients, in the main client's language.

Two lists show cases and open hearings untouched for 30 days by default.

Access rights for cases and hearings

  • Cases and Hearings each have three rights per user: Read-only, User: Own Documents (a lawyer or follower of the case or hearing), Manager: All Documents.
  • Several lawyers can share a case.
  • A case's privacy decides whether its client sees it on the portal, not what staff see.
  • Phones get the same cases and rights in the browser.

What jaah law does not do with cases

  • No link to a court system: hearings and judgments are not brought in.
  • Deadline to-dos count calendar days; won or final judgments get none.
  • An online hearing is a link, not built-in video.
  • Invoice amounts are typed in, not built from hours.
  • Judgments are not shown on the client portal.
  • Double booking is checked between hearings only.

Questions about legal case management software

What does legal case management software do?

It keeps one record per court case, with its parties, hearings, judgments and documents. In jaah law, its lawyers who have a user also get to-dos for hearings, minutes and appeals.

What happens to the deadline to-do on appeal?

It closes by itself when Appeal or Reconsideration is chosen, and the revocation one when Revoke is. If the firm does not appeal, a lawyer can close it by hand.

Can a lawyer be booked on two hearings at once?

No, unless the firm allows it in the settings. The check compares hearings with hearings only, not with a lawyer's other meetings or time off.

Can the client follow the case online?

Yes, with a portal account, as the main client, when the case's privacy allows it (the default). Hearing pages show requirements and session notes; judgments are not shown.

Does it import hearing dates from the court's system?

No. The firm's staff enter each hearing date and judgment on the case themselves, because jaah law has no connection to any court system. The lawyers' to-dos take their dates from those entries.
